The Origins of Tortilla Chips
The story of tortilla chips begins with the humble corn tortilla, a staple in Mesoamerican cuisine for thousands of years.
Ancient Beginnings: Corn tortillas have been a dietary staple for indigenous peoples in Mexico and Central America since ancient times. They were traditionally made from masa, a dough made from nixtamalized corn.
Modern Invention: Tortilla chips as we know them today were created in the early 20th century. The invention is often credited to Rebecca Webb Carranza, who ran a tortilla factory in Los Angeles. In the late 1940s, she began frying discarded misshapen tortillas and selling them as snacks. These fried tortilla pieces quickly gained popularity.
The Rise of Nachos
One of the most popular ways to enjoy tortilla chips is as nachos, a dish topped with melted cheese and various other ingredients. The origin of nachos is an interesting tale.
Invented by Ignacio "Nacho" Anaya: In 1943, in the small Mexican town of Piedras Negras, Ignacio "Nacho" Anaya was working at the Victory Club restaurant. One day, a group of hungry American military wives came in after the kitchen had closed. Anaya, not wanting to disappoint them, quickly improvised by topping some freshly fried tortilla chips with grated cheese and jalapeños, then heating them up. The dish was an instant hit and became known as "Nachos Especiales."
Spread to the U.S.: The popularity of nachos spread quickly, especially in Texas. In 1976, a sports stadium in Arlington, Texas, introduced "ballpark nachos," leading to a boom in their popularity across the United States.
